We are victims of corruption, rue builders

Mumbai: "Our biggest problem is corruption. And despite being victims of corruption, we face flak from all quarters," said Lalit Kumar Jain, president of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI) at the opening address of 12th NATCON being held at a Barcelona five-star.

Addressing a gathering of 500 developers from across the country, including a delegation of 60 from Mumbai, Jain said the builder community had taken things lying down for too long, in spite of being a key contributor to the economy. "It's time for us to sensitise customers that the humiliating approval process and corruption is to blame for the problems of developers and buyers," he said.

While the opening session focussed on stock taking, the subsequent sessions for the two-day conference were about introducing Indian developers to architectural case studies from around the world and exposing them to international best business practices, well justifying the need for a European venue like Barcelona for the conference.

"Many member developers from Tier II and Tier III cities don't have the resources to travel abroad and experience world-class constructions. This conference is aimed at giving them such an exposure," said member of NATCON organising committee, Sunil Mantri.

The conference has a liberal sprinkling of westerners.
"We already have 200 foreign architects executing projects in India and with each passing year, the Indian realty sector is becoming increasingly international in its outlook and scale," said Dharmesh Jain, vice president of CREDAI. India is tipped to be the world's third largest construction market by 2020.
